E-cigarettes and e-cigarette liquids contain a complex mixture of components, including nicotine. Most research currently done with e-cigarettes and e-cigarette liquids focuses on human health effects of utilization of the products and how the body interacts with components. Very little research has been conducted exploring the environmental impacts of e-cigarette and e-liquid release in environmental systems. This project aims to quantify the amounts of nicotine and other additives from the improper disposal of e-cigarette cartridges and liquids. Initial experiments validated nicotine content in various commercial e-liquids. Subsequent analysis will determine leachable nicotine from containers soaked in test fluids. Quantifying nicotine content in used e-liquids and using that information to determine environmental impacts is the ultimate goal of the project.
