Globalization has led to products and product components being sourced from many different countries. Therefore, even domestic brands of consumer products can contain ingredients which are globally sourced. There is no guarantee that such globally sourced products and components will have safe levels of heavy metals. This is of special concern for products that are meant to be consumed internally. The goal of this project is to quantify the levels of lead, arsenic, and cadmium in commercially available fruit drinks using total reflection X-ray fluorescence. This powerful, yet simple technique allows for the rapid, simultaneous quantification of multiple trace metals. Metal quantification in each sample was achieved by the addition of a known quantity of a rare earth. Samples were processed in batches where each sample was analyzed in triplicate. Reagent blanks were processed with each batch.
