The design of new materials for the capture and detection of actinides from aqueous media is of practical and fundamental importance in monitoring (for instance) environmental migration at legacy nuclear weapons production and waste disposal sites. Lanthanide (Ln) containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a possible means to address this need owing to their inherent luminescence properties and propensity to form structurally diverse and functional architectures. We have prepared a series of porous Ln containing materials that demonstrate affinity for the capture of aqueous actinyl species, e.g. UO22+ or NpO2+. Increasing the surface area and pore size of the material via activation – a series of heat treatments that selectively remove ligands to create defect sites – leds to an increase in actinyl uptake capacity. Detection of the actinide species occurs colorimetrically as the color of the material changes from tan to yellow upon adsorption and also through changes in the luminescence. Presented herein will be an overview of our efforts to synthesize 4f-element containing MOFs for use in actinide sequestration and detection.
