The University of Southern Maine (USM) Chemistry Club promotes chemistry and science by actively engaging the students and community. A previous ACS student chapter fell inactive 5 years ago. This year we have successfully re-established a chapter at our university. In doing so, we are hoping to establish a model that USM’s future chemistry club can follow in order to have a successful club year after year. Something our club noticed missing from the College of Science, Technology, and Health at USM were opportunities for professional development. Our club began working together with the university to offer professional development seminars once a semester with the intention of having them more frequently as word got out and attendance increased. These seminars are open to anyone and advertised throughout the science department. In addition to filling in the lack of professional development seminars on campus, our club has instituted bi-weekly meetings featuring demonstrations as well as field trips to allow our members to see different types of careers they can pursue with their degree. This allows our club members to network with professionals in the field as well as interacting with people with similar interests. We also conduct a workshop in which we invite high school students to our lab to perform a condensed version of our general chemistry experiment to prepare them for a college chemistry lab setting. Our club also actively engages with the community by visiting local schools and events to share our love of science. The model includes fundraising which brings awareness of the club on campus as well as establishes funds to engage in community outreach and for the following year’s club.
