Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions have been proved effective in formation of C-C with a diverse range of aryl and heteroaryl substrates. Being the most fundamental reaction in organic synthesis, a vast amount of literature is available describing various effective catalyst and solvent conditions to perform the Friedel-Crafts chemistry. Traditional methods involve use of a Lewis acid catalyst such as AlCl<sub>3</sub> and an alkyl halide, which imparts an alkyl group on aromatic ring during the course of the reaction. Herein, we report the modified version of Fridel-Crafts alkylation of aromatics using benzyl alcohols as a source of alkyl group. Our method involves the use of commercially available (diethylamino)sulfur trifluoride (DAST) as a reagent and initiator and is performed at room temperature under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions. This method provided a direct access to various diarylmethanes in good to excellent yields in short reaction times.
