Luminescent polymeric materials (LPMs) have emerged as a growing field in chemical synthesis with implications across several disciplines, including material science and biological imaging. With the increase in demand for new materials in these fields, expanding the scope and diversity of LPMs continues to be a vibrant area of research. Our group is interested in utilizing in a class of chromophores based upon the 2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (HBI) and benzothiazole (HBT) backbones. While HBI and HBT have been extensively investigated, both are underutilized in polymeric materials. Therefore, we prepared a new class of chemical initiators for ring-opening polymerization of e-caprolactone based on the HBI and HBT cores. Furthermore, we demonstrate the HBT-terminated polycaprolactone assemble around a Eu core to form star polymers.
