Aerosol particles contribute to light extinction through absorption and scattering processes that are dependent on their size, composition, and chemical structure.  As a result of significant variation in these parameters, particles are able to contribute to a warming or cooling effect on the climate.  A pulsed laser cavity ring-down spectroscopy instrument is described that measures the light extinction due to particle load of outdoor ambient air samples.  Outdoor air from a sampling site on the University of Central Arkansas campus in Conway, AR is continuously monitored throughout the measurement period.  Humidity and temperature of the sampled air is recorded.  Light extinction by particles is distinguished from other sources by measuring the samples in reference to the same ambient air passed through a chemically inert particle filter.  Measurements are collected at 532 nm produced by a 1Hz Nd-YAG laser.  Size distributions and counts of the particle samples are also reported.
