We are continuing to investigate the design, synthesis, and characterization of functionalized thiophenes of interest for creating stable, intimate interfaces between engineered electronic biomedical devices and living tissue.  We have previously discussed the use of carboxylic-acid functionalized ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT-acid), and its utility both for securing specific peptides to surfaces as well as improving the adhesion of electrodeposited poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films to solid inorganic surfaces.  Most recently we have developed aldehyde and maleimide functionalized EDOTs that can be used to create a wide variety of corresponding polymers.  We are particularly interested in phenolamines such as dopamine, tyramine, and norepinephrine that are known to function in the sympathetic and central nervous systems as neurotransmitters and hormones.  We have designed families of hybrid EDOT-phenolamine monomers with pendant amines, pendant phenols, or both pendant amine and phenols.  We will discuss the electrochemical synthesis, physical chemical characterization, cell toxicity, and morphology of these materials.  Our long-term goal is to develop specialized EDOT monomers that can be locally deposited as PEDOT around specific components of the target tissue.
