We will first review some earlier work dealing with a mechanistic study of singlet fission in molecular organic semiconductors and will present more recent data providing unambiguous evidence for the direct involvement of charge-transfer excitations. We will then discuss in more details the free state energy diagram for singlet fission in acene based molecular materials showing that entropic contributions can enable efficient generation of triplets despite the large endothermic character of the process. In the last part of the presentation, we will demonstrate that the complementary process, that is triplets upconversion into singlets, occurs efficiently in novel organic-inorganic hybrid systems, offering great premise for a wide range of applications.     <br/>
