Incorporation of β-unsubstituted oligothiophene unit into poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole) (PDDP) semiconductors has largely enhanced charge mobility and performance of electronic devices. Such enhancements have been usually attributed to the improved interchain packing of polymers, yet how the inserted oligothiophene bridge affects intrachain transport properties remains unexplored. This presentation describes the rate of charge transport by tunneling across a series of single-molecules comprising diketopyrrolopyrrole and β-unsubstituted oligothiophene units. The tunneling rate unexpectedly increases with increasing the length of β-unsubstituted oligothiophene unit, which does not obey the widely studied Simmons model where the rate decreases exponentially with increasing the molecular length. Our work adds to the reasoning about good charge mobility for PDDP4T (high mobility p-type polymer, PDDP with four thiophene bridge) in bulk electronic devices as compared with that of PDDP.
