Biology and biochemistry take place in aqueous environments. Therefore, it is natural to explore the origins of life using this system. However, this work seeks to challenge this idea. Phase partitioning and ion exchange chromatography (IEC) was used to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), a 13-mer DNA sequence, and a roughly 500-mer sonicated genomic DNA sequence from an aqueous phase to an oil phase. The IEC used a Dowex 1 column for the stationary phase and one of three solvents, acetonitrile (ACN), decanol (DOH), or chloroform (CHCl<sub>3</sub>) in conjunction with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) as the mobile phase. The eluate was examined using UV-vis spectrophotometry. From these tests it was found that size plays a large role in the transfer properties of DNA. As the size of the DNA strand increased the transfer rate went down significantly with the genomic DNA not transferring anything.
