Polyoxometalates (POMs) are anionic metal-oxo clusters featuring transition metals in high oxidation states coordinated by a number of bridging oxo ligands. Their known hostile bioactivity toward tumors and infectious microorganisms, along with their high solubility and ability to specifically target pathogenic enzymes, has led to increased interest in their potential as inorganic therapeutics. However, the specific POM/enzyme interactions that lead to these bioactive properties are not well understood, thus preventing the rational design of stronger and more specific POM-based inhibitors. Resonance Raman spectroscopy is a technique that can provide indirect information about POMs, provided they absorb visible light at a frequency that matches the laser excitation. To test the feasibility of this approach, a series of POMs with various colors were synthesized by attaching aromatic ligands of different sizes to tetrabutylammonium octamolybdate [(n-C4H9)4N]4[Mo8O26] via dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) coupling. These products were then characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopies.
