Hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) is the replacement of C-H bonds with deuterium or tritium. Catalysts capable of performing this transformation on sp3 carbons are limited. Previous studies in this lab have demonstrated that Ag-Bi mixed materials are capable of performing this transformation on sp3 hybridized carbon atoms in nitriles. In order to identify the source of HIE, which could be due to silver, bismuth, or a combination of the two metals, the ability of each system to perform this transformation was evaluated with acetonitrile as the substrate. Proton substitution by deuterium was evaluated using 1H NMR versus an internal standard. The results of these studies, and the ability of each system to perform HIE will be discussed.
