Material extrusion additive manufacturing (MEAM) is one of the most widely used and investigated additive manufacturing (AM) methods, and due to its relative simplicity, it is one of the most accessible AM methods available. Like many other AM methods, MEAM is being used increasingly to produce functional parts, necessitating the identification and development of other materials with more desirable properties to be used with the process. Semicrystalline polymers are feedstock materials of interest to the community, but due to crystallization processes that can occur during printing, not all semicrystalline polymers are compatible with MEAM in its conventional configuration. In our work, we have employed modeling, characterization, and design techniques to evaluate a promising MEAM feedstock, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). Specifically, we have used simulation of the printing and deposition processes, fast scanning calorimetry (FSC), and post-processing heat treatment protocols evaluated by the Taguchi method to more fully understand the performance of PPS as a MEAM feedstock and the relationship between PPS crystallization and the printing process. Overall, the results indicated that PPS is suited for use with MEAM due to its properties and crystallization kinetics. Additionally, the techniques used in this work could be used on a larger library of materials to enable more rapid screening of candidate feedstock materials.
