Electron-neutral interactions are involved in a broad range of important chemical and physical processes, and the different approaches to their study have created an enticing patchwork picture of fleeting temporary anion states, diffuse non-valence-bound states, and more strongly bound, localized valence anion states. Anion PE spectroscopy of D-●A complexes provides a glimmer of what lies between these limits, such as electrostatic stabilization of temporary anion states, coupling between electrostatically-bound and valence-bound states, and the recently observed hints of weakly-bound anion states that emerge temporarily along a reaction coordinate. Results of studies on families of molecular systems (D- = O2-, OH- ; A = unsaturated volatile organic compounds, C6H6-xFx) that build on unexpected phenomena observed (and subsequently understood) during recent studies on atmospherically relevant radicals will be used to glean more information on both non-valence-bound anions and strongly bound anions.
