The Eastern University American Chemical Society Student Affiliates will present our year-long theme on promoting the chemistry of recycling on campus, a project supported by an Innovative Activities grant and the Eastern University Chemistry Department, along with our participation in regular activities and community building. This includes purchasing recycling stations and a campaign to educate the student body about the chemistry of recycling. Efforts consist of hanging informational graphics, conducting up pop-up seminars and demonstrations, hosting speakers in the field, and taking a trip to the university’s contracted recycling facility. The intent is to facilitate recycling as an easily implementable part of every student’s daily routine. Educational materials maximize the success of the stations and provide students with a better knowledge of the chemical processes that are utilized by recycling facilities so that they can understand what can and can’t be recycled and the reasons why. Our program enhanced the ability of the students to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives, creating an atmosphere of environmentally conscious living at Eastern at both the institutional and individual levels. Tying into our recycling theme, we’ll present how we celebrated National Chemistry week with a Marvelous Metals rock collection displayed in the campus library. Other activities include Program-in-a-Box events, hosting department alumni speaking about their achievements post-graduation, and bringing in industry professionals to promote career development. Our club works every year to improve our campus and build our community around our shared love of chemistry!
