The award winners have provided significant insight into the mechanism of CO<sub>2</sub> reduction to CO at a gold electrode. Many methods such as nano/meso-structuring and crystal faceting have been employed to modulate the selectivity of the reduction reaction by averting the hydrogen evolution reaction. The mechanism for the CO<sub>2</sub> reduction by the award winners has been augmented with a comprehensive kinetics analysis that considers mass transport and homogeneous coupled reactions, to provide an activation-driving force relationship over a large potential window. With this model in hand, strategies to redirect reduction to a CO product to more elaborate carbo-based products will be presented.
