Zeolites are crystalline materials with microporous structures and well-defined pores and cavities of molecular dimensions (ca. 3–12 Å). The flexibility of their pore topology and chemical composition has allowed a wide range of industrial applications, particularly as catalysts in oil refining and petrochemistry, and most of these processes take advantage of the shape selectivity imposed by their micropores to the formation and/or diffusion of non-desired products. However, when shape selectivity is not the main objective, the narrow pore dimensions of most zeolites may lead to diffusional limitations, underuse of the zeolite micropore volume and reduced throughput. In these cases, the use of nanozeolites with small crystal sizes (&lt;30 nm) will result in higher conversion levels, higher selectivity to primary products and, consequently, longer catalyst life due to the easier accessibility of the reactants to the active sites and the decreased diffusional path lengths.<br/>Here we show the benefits of catalysts based on nanozeolites designed following a rational approach, when applied in different industrially relevant processes such as aromatics alkylation, oligomerization of light olefin rich fractions to liquid fuels and conversion of heavy reformate streams.
