The use of sorbents in medicine is aimed at neutralizing the negative effects of endo- and exotoxins on the human body. To achieve the effectiveness of therapy, it is necessary to reorganize the internal environment, reduce the toxic load on the organs of the immune system, and remove toxins from the body. The most effective methods are hemo- and plasmosorption. For extracorporeal hemocorrection in the complex therapy of exogenous poisoning, surgical, therapeutic, infectious diseases, it is advisable to use carbon fibers that act as a sorbent. Carbon fibers are non-selective materials capable of absorbing a wide range of substances. They are promising as materials for the creation of biospecific sorbents. Selective sorption activity of carbon fibers is achieved by modifying them with biologically active substances containing functional groups. One of the most promising modifier substances is pectin polysaccharides. Carbon fiber was modified with solutions of pectic polysaccharides of various origins. Pectin samples differed in galacturonic acid content, degree of esterification, and molecular weight. A relationship was found between the physicochemical parameters of pectin polysaccharides, the concentration of the solution, and the sorption ability of the modified carbon fiber with respect to bilirubin. Based on the data obtained, the optimal physicochemical parameters of the modifier substances and the conditions for obtaining the modified carbon fiber were determined, which was the basis for the development of a method for producing hemosorbent. It has been demonstrated that the sorption capacity with respect to bilirubin of modified samples significantly exceeds that of samples before modification. Thus, carbon fibers of biospecific action modified with pectin polysaccharides will expand the range of hemosorption materials used in the treatment of diseases of the hepatobiliary system.
