In the last decade, we have developed a series of high performance semiconducting co-polymers of fused thiophenes.[1,2] Monomer AMDHP is a new type of acceptor that was originally reported by Yi Liu from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.[3] Here we combined our fused thiophene monomer with the new AMDHP monomer to form a new type of high performance semiconducting co-polymers of fused thiophenes. The synthesis is demonstrated for a specific example of these OSC polymers containing AMDHP and FT4 moieties, both with branched side chains. Thin film transistors were fabricated from this new polymer using a bottom gate top contact configuration. These showed an average hole mobility of 0.736 cm2V-1s-1. Our molecular modeling shows that the repeat unit of copolymers of fused thiophene with AMDHP has a lower reorganization energy than the corresponding repeat unit of copolymers of fused thiophene with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP). The average hole mobilities of thin film transistors of two similar polymers, with different side chains and fewer thiophene groups separating the AMDHP and FT4 moieties, are much lower than that of this polymer. The possible steric effect and branched side chain effect on the device performance difference are discussed.
