The emission of transition metal (TM) compounds can be tuned by the addition of alkynyl ligands with varying electron density. For instance, electron deficient ligands, such as ethynyl-pentafluorobenzene, can be used to blue-shift emission. Herein, we report the synthesis of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)pyridine (TMS-C24-pyF). Computational studies, utilizing density functional theory, indicate this pyridyl analog is more electron deficient than ethynyl-pentafluorobenzene. Strategies to append this ligand to a transition metal to generate tbpyPt(C24-pyF)2 are described. This species is compared to a series of tbpyPt(C2R)2 compounds, which are characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, electrochemistry, UV-visible spectroscopy, and emission spectroscopy.
