Mechanochemistry provides a means of reducing solvent use and waste generation. Our research team investigated the protection of aldehydes from degradation by conversion to bisulfite addition compounds. The addition was performed both with and without solvent using mechanochemistry and the results were compared. Thus a mixture of sodium bisulfite and anisaldehyde was ground in a mortar and pestle at room temperature gave 98% yield of the addition product, confirmed by NMR and IR analysis. When the addition was performed with water solvent the yield was 74%. After compiling results from various aldehydes, our team analyzed the overall cost and benefits of switching from a traditional addition reaction to a solvent-free reaction.
