East Carolina University is integrating linked" multi-semester Chemistry Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) into the standard laboratory curriculum. In the first (organic) semester, students designed and synthesized a small library of membrane-localizing fluorophores that may have potential as cryopreservatives for red blood cells. The convergent three-step approach utilized the classic reactions of nucleophilic substitution, Fischer esterification, and Pd(0)-catalyzed coupling. The final products feature moderately complex proton NMR and IR spectra, and temperature-dependent fluorescence behavior; as such, they are suitable for in-depth studies in subsequent courses (e.g., quantitative analysis and physical chemistry).
