The anthropogenic CO2 is a primary contributor to global warming, and therefore various efforts have been made up to now to mitigate its atmospheric concentration that already reached 410 ppm in September 2019. As a plausible option to reduce the CO2 emission from large point sources such as coal-fired power plants and other industrial processes (i.e., steel-making, cement, chemicals, and refining), carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies have received great attention for past few decades. The captured CO2 from the large point sources can either be sequestered via direct injection for geological storage or be converted to useful chemicals. Among the options for CO2 utilization, in particular, converting CO2 into solid carbonates (i.e., CaCO3, MgCO3) is recognized to exhibit great potential because (i) large amounts of CO2 can be stored into the solid carbonates via spontaneous exothermic reactions between alkaline earth metals (i.e., Ca, Mg) and CO2, (ii) the alkaline earth metals can be supplied from naturally occurring silicate minerals and/or industrial wastes such as coal-ash and steel-making slags, and (iii) the solid carbonates can be utilized in various industrial applications such as paper, cement, aggregates, etc. Although it is known that the industrial wastes (i.e., steel-making slags) generally exhibit higher reactivity with CO2 than that of natural silicate minerals, the complexity in the components of the industrial slags and its effects on the leaching behavior must be addressed. Here, we investigate the fundamental leaching behavior of steel-making slag focusing on various elements including Ca/Mg/Si/Fe via thermodynamic and kinetic analyses. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-ray Powder Diffraction (PXRD), and Energy Dispersive X-ray analyzer (SEM-EDX) are employed. The extraction efficiency is also explored as functions of particle size distribution, solid-liquid ratio (S/L), and stirring rate.
