The American Chemical Society Student Chapter at West Virginia State University has been on a mission from the beginning of the year. The chapter mission is centered around being involved in an array of outreach activities that include demonstrations and interactive experiments. The members work with students from different local elementary, middle, and high schools as well as Boys and Girls clubs in order to engage their interests in future STEM related fields. Outreach events give the members the opportunity to help and interact with their community while promoting STEM. This type of outreaches provide the next generation of college students with more exposure to the multiple STEM fields. The scientific outreaches included a variety of demonstrations and hands-on activities, such as isolating DNA from fruits, building density columns, creating electric circuits, and many others, which illustrated important aspects of science. Our outreach events help inspire, educate, and include the next generation scientists. Furthermore, teachers from different local schools were in contact with our chapter continuously to arrange outreach events to their schools. That resulted from the positive feedbacks from our local community as well as the students in different local schools. The success that resulted from these activities had encouraged many students to pursue STEM degrees at our local schools as well as other universities in the state and region. These activities are invaluable to provide our rural students an opportunity to observe and enjoy science in ways that would be impossible without the support of the ACS and the members involved.
