In 2004, a biaxial nematic phase was discovered in bent-core oxadiazole based liquid crystals, which offers the possibility for faster switching times. Applications are limited by the fact that the nematic phase occurs at too high of a temperature for practical use. But, in adding lateral substituents (methyl or halogens) temperature to this class of compounds, a depression of phase transition temperatures occurs. We are interested in studying how changing the nature and position of the lateral groups alters the phase behavior. The synthesis, purification, and phase behavior of new target compounds will be discussed.
