Personalized medicine requires a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides to construct an effective radiopharmaceutical arsenal. Ideally, these two companion radiopharmaceuticals would consist of two radionuclides of the same element, such as 43,44Sc/47Sc or 64Cu/67Cu. In this paradigm, the diagnostic and therapeutic drugs will behave identically in vivo. To this end, Argonne is performing RD&D and production of high specific activity radionuclides such as 47Sc and 67Cu through photonuclear reactions. Targets were irradiated with Argonne's 55 MeV/30 kW electron linac. Incident electrons were converted to photons with water-cooled tantalum convertors. Copper-67 is produced in activity levels of 1 – 2Ci with specific activities &gt;200 Ci/mg (67Cu/Cu, end of bombardment, based on ICP-MS). Copper-67 is produced via the 68Zn(γ,p)67Cu reaction from enriched 68Zn cast as large cylinders (~100 g). Bulk 68Zn is removed via sublimation under vacuum at 650 C. The copper-67 residue is dissolved in HCl (8M) and concentrated HNO3 and then purified with a Dowex AG1X8 anion exchange resin. Copper-67 is isolated with &gt;95% recovery and enriched 68Zn is recycled for future irradiations. Effective specific activity (ESA) of the product has been determined by TETA and DOTA titration studies, ESA of &gt;150 Ci/mg and &gt;120 Ci/mg (Cu-67/Cu, end of bombardment), respectively. Scandium-47 has been produced from pressed pellets of natural titanium dioxide. These demonstrations have been limited to &lt;5 mCi of 47Sc produced. The titanium target material was dissolved in sulfuric acid and purified using an Eichrom DGA normal chromatographic resin. Scandium-47 was eluted from the column with HCl (0.1M). Scandium-47 was recovered with &gt;90% recovery with specific activities &gt;24 Ci/mg (47Sc/Sc, end of bombardment, based on ICP-MS). RD&D is being performed to enhance processing efficiencies and develop Ti-target material recycling methodologies. These efforts will be discussed.
