In this project, homogeneity of binary liquid mixtures consisting of components with different dielectric constants was studied using Walden’s rule. In particular, the electrical conductivity and viscosity of polypropylene glycol-water (PPG-H2O) mixtures containing various water concentrations, from 10 wt% to 100 wt%, were measured in a temperature range from 10 °C to 40 °C. The total sodium chloride concentration in each sample was 2 mM. Because the Walden’s constant increased 4 times when the water concentration was increased from 10 wt% to 40 wt%, it was concluded that water was dispersed heterogeneously in polypropylene glycol matrix. For comparison, the Walden’s constant corresponding to ethylene glycol-water mixture (EG-H2O) was also studied and found to be water concentration independent, indicating that this mixture is fully homogeneous in the entire concentration range studied. The Walden constant corresponding to EG-H2O mixture is less dependent on temperature than that corresponding to PPG-H2O, which corroborates the above statements. The refractive index corresponding to the PPG-water mixture exhibits a positive deviation from linearity while EG-H2O mixture behaves as an ideal mixture. The surface tension of PPG is the same as that of 60 wt% PPG-H2O mixture in the temperature interval from – 5 0C to 25 0C indicating that the interactions between PPG molecules are responsible for the droplet size, which in turn corroborates the statement that the water is in the form of nanodroplets dispersed in the PPG matrix.
