Conventional surfactants or surface-active agents are molecules composed of a hydrophilic head group and a hydrophobic tail. These micelles can be used to solubilize oil and water, which can be inherently manipulated. From previous literature, anion concentration is known to be important when the ionic micelle aggregate changes shape or morphology. This research looks to quantify the concentration of anions on the surface of micelles. In order to quantify the average anion concentration, aqueous chemical trapping experiments with a sterically hindered benzene diazonium compound are recor.ded with known salt concentration. The products of the chemical trapping samples were determined and analyzed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to create a calibration curve for the water product (mesitol), bromide product, and ester product. The chromatograms depict an increase of the anion product and a decrease of mesitol under controlled aqueous salt concentrations. The quantified product distribution allows us to relate these anion concentration ratios, giving a better understanding of the anions at the interface of the micelles while utilizing a system with a very similar diazonium compound.
