Studies on the Wittig reaction-Chemiluminescence using 9-anthraldehyde and benzyl triphenyl phosphonium halide have been reported in scientific literature and practiced in undergraduate organic laboratory experiments. In this study we describe our efforts to develop a procedure that includes a number of substituted 9-anthraldehydes to react with a wide variety of para-substituted benzyl triphenyl phosphonium halide to explore the scope of the reaction. The experiment allows the students to work and characterize of their own unknown product with IR and 1H NMR.
