Owing to their high porosity, stability, and synthetic tunability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been adapted to a variety of applications from catalysis to molecular separation. However, the incorporation of MOFs into industrial technologies is greatly limited by their limited processability. We report the first self-assembled porous monolayer composed of discrete polymer-coated metal-organic framework nanoparticles. Particle monolayers were assembled at a liquid-air interface to produce films that are 87 wt% (89 vol%) MOF and retain the crystallinity and porosity of the solid-state MOF particles. The monolayers could be transferred to a variety of substrates and several monolayers of MOFs could be stacked to create MOF multilayers which could be manipulated as a free-standing film.
