Gold, copper, and iron nanoparticles were synthesized using various fruit and leaf extracts and characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and light scattering. The nanoparticles were used in a series of applications: generation of singlet oxygen via laser irradiation, and Fenton oxidation of common food dyes. Singlet oxygen was detected both directly using a near-IR detector, and indirectly via the quenching of the compound 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran. Fenton oxidation of Acid Black and other dyes was monitored using UV-vis spectroscopy and the effect of nanoparticle concentration on reaction rate was studied. Finally, the inhibition of singlet oxygen generation and Fenton oxidation by the common radical scavenger ascorbic acid was investigated. Nanoparticles synthesized using green methods were as effective as the more traditional nanoparticles in generating singlet oxygen.
