Since the end of last century, fullerenes (C60) have been widely studied for their potential applications in biomedicine and electrochemistry. However, their dispersion in water is difficult even if it can be improved by mechanical stirring or using ultrasound. Proper dispersion often requires the use of a surfactant in order to obtain stable colloidal particles in the form of aggregated fullerenes. We propose to use an amphiphilic copolymer instead of a molecular surfactant (Fig.1) in order to promote attractive interaction between the polymer and the fullerenes (hydrophobic, π-stacking). To produce these colloidal suspensions, we formed an oil-in-water emulsion using ultrasound with the fullerene in the oil droplets and the polymer in the water phase and at the interface. Subsequently, the oil was evaporated. We also used the so-called Ouzo effect, which resulted in the spontaneous formation of a colloidal fullerene dispersion. The obtained colloidal suspensions were analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy and light scattering. The final goal is to incorporate these nanoparticles into a hydrogel in order to obtain organic-organic nanocomposite hydrogels with new functional properties.
