Procedures for the separation and quantification of short-lived activation products (t1/2 &lt; 5 years) have been underdeveloped in historical literature. The focus has been on the separation of long-lived activation products, fission products, and actinides. Information from these short-lived activation products could help to inform health risks associated with nuclear accidents. Research into short-lived activation products is difficult due in part to technical barriers associated in working with radioactive materials as well as the short half-life of the isotopes themselves. This work highlights the development of a procedure to rapidly separate 10 activation product isotopes (198Au, 192Ir, 72Ga, 51Cr, 191/195m/197Pt, 54Mn, 57Co, and 59Fe) from a matrix including both fission products and soil. The procedure developed was able to screen the short-lived activation products from the fission product and soil interferences within 20 h through the utilization of ion exchange chromatography and gamma spectroscopy. Employing these two techniques allowed the separation procedure to screen activation products from the fission product interferences and the soil matrix. The work presented here demonstrates a procedure that can be carried out to quickly screen activation products with a minimal amount of time and effort, allowing further efforts to be devoted to a more time consuming and in depth quantification.
