How confident are you in teaching IUPAC nomenclature of typical organic compounds?  Do you find it a challenge to engage your students in the process of understanding how to use systematic nomenclature?<br/> <br/>This talk will focus on a problem-solving based approach to learning/teaching the foundational rules of IUPAC nomenclature of typical organic compounds via the use of two different alkanes.  Both alkanes, along with their structure representation (as seen below), were specifically chosen for their use in teaching not only the standard rules of IUPAC, but for their inherent complication related to “tie-breaking” rules.  These two compounds have been used in nearly 30 class sections of Organic Chemistry over the past 13 years and have proven to significantly assist students in understanding the systematic “thought process” of IUPAC nomenclature.
