This poster provides a look at an advanced laboratory experiment to introduce undergraduate students to HPLC method development and validation through the analysis of curcuminoid samples. The three major curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, which are commonly found as a mixture in turmeric spices. Students are tasked to first consider experimental parameters and then use those parameters to separate commercially available turmeric products to identify and quantify the curcuminoids present. Furthermore students are given an opportunity to authenticate the samples and complete the validation of the method developed and implemented. This experiment will show students a more in-depth look at HPLC methodology, while encouraging them to think critically through the steps of method development as opposed to following a set of standard operating procedures.
