One of the greatest engineering challenges of the 21st century is developing viable methods to utilize CO2 to remove it from the atmosphere, while one of the greatest scientific challenges is developing predictive understanding of synthesis processes that operate very far from local equilibrium. Low temperature plasma is at the heart of efforts to address both of these challenges. Low temperature plasma can activate CO2 causing it to chemically react at high rates with high energy conversion efficiency. Furthermore, low temperature plasma is a multiple temperature phase that operates very far from local equilibrium; with some species near room temperature, and extremely hot electrons in the range from 10,000 to 100,000 K. Catalyst particles can add an additional degree of freedom for controlling conversion and yield in plasma chemistry, but to date the fundamental chemical interactions between catalyst and plasma are poorly understood. Recently it has been proposed that plasma activation lowers the energetic barrier to reaction, and thus the energy of adsorption is not required to be as negative as it would be in traditional thermal catalysis. However, the respective roles of the catalyst surface and adsorbing molecule in plasma activation are unclear. In this talk, we will present the results of experiments focused on clarifying the situation using a well-defined model system. The experiments were conducted using an apparatus capable of simultaneously monitoring the effluent composition and the catalyst by means of an in-situ surface characterization technique.
