Our research group has recently reported a mild synthetic method to install N-sulfonyl units directly into heteroaryl aldehyde functionality under non-traditional conditions. The one pot, two-step method for installation of N-sulfonyl unit operates under non-acidic conditions and utilizes air stable, commercially available reagents. During our initial investigation, a number of indole-containing compounds were identified as compounds with potential for interesting bioactive properties according to cell viability studies that were conducted. In this study, we have conducted a more thorough investigation into the role of the N-sulfonyl unit installed at the 3-position of a common indole scaffold. Our recent progress towards the exploration of the steric and electronic limitations of the sulfonamide reagent used in the reaction along with results from the cell viability studies of the prepared compounds will be presented.
