Nitration of 3’-hydroxyacetophenone results in a mixture of nitro- and dinitrohydroxyacetophenones. The aryl protons of the nitration products obtained produce discreet signals in the proton NMR spectrum. By integrating the areas of each of the signals, students are able to identify which signals are produced by the same isomer so that the relative ratios of each product can be calculated. Additionally, careful inspection of the multiplicities and chemical shift values enables students to identify the regioisomers produced in the reaction. All the experimental work was conducted by undergraduate students.
