Quantum dots, having fluorescent properties, can have their photoluminescence altered through interactions with proteins, which was utilized in bioassays for protein biomarker detection. To improve the detection sensitivity and speed, the effect of incubation time on protein-QD solutions was studied. The results showed that the presence of biomarker proteins was able to be determined, after an incubation time as short as a few minutes, at a concentration range of hundreds of ng/mL. However, different biomarkers had different responses to incubation time. The detection of cytochrome C was less sensitive to incubation time, while the detection of lysozyme was more sensitive to a prolonged incubation. These results provide insights to the protein-QD interactions and potential biomedical applications.
