In this work, we investigate the phase behavior of a model ternary polymer grafted nanoparticle – matrix composite and the parameters guiding nanoparticle assembly. To date, much of the work investigating the phase behavior of polymer nanocomposites (PNC) has focused on two component systems, with limited studies have been done to understand the thermodynamic effects of adding an additional component. Here, we investigate model binary and ternary nanocomposites of poly(methyl methacrylate) grafted silica nanoparticles (PMMA NP),  poly(styrene-<i>ran</i>-acrylonitrile) (SAN), and poly(methyl methacrylate) as a platform to elucidate and directly compare the governing thermodynamic contributions to binary and ternary PNCs. The thermally annealed films are characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), revealing lower critical solution temperature behavior. Adding PMMA homopolymer to the binary PNC, it is demonstrated that directed interfacial segregation of PMMA stabilizes the composite, leading to increased miscibility in off-critical compositions. A simple interfacial scaling model provides a general guideline for predicting the extent of compatibilization. These experimental results are then compared with coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations.<br/>
