Transition metal hydrides are key intermediates in a wide range of important catalytic transformations. This presentation will describe studies of small-molecule hydrogenation using a series of metal-phosphine complexes that contain redox-active organic hydride donors incorporated within their secondary coordination spheres. These hydride donors are designed to facilitate H2 activation and hydride transfer. The catalytic hydrogenation activity of Group 9 and 10 metal complexes containing these ligands will be presented. In some cases these complexes are active for the hydrogenation of CO2 and of unsaturated organic substrates at very mild temperatures and pressures. Stoichiometric reactivity studies focused on key reaction steps, particularly H2 activation and hydride transfer, will be presented. Thermodynamic and conformational factors that influence the reactivity will also be discussed.
