The 2,5-bis(α-pyridyl)pyrrole (PDP) ligand is a relatively unstudied tridentate pincer-type ligand. To date, only a handful of group ten transition metal PDP complexes have been reported. Here, a series of platinum PDP monomeric ((PDP)Pt-X; X = Cl, I) and dimeric ([(PDP)Pt-X]2; X = CH3, C6H5, I, Cl) complexes were synthesized and fully characterized. The dimeric clamshell complexes have two arms of the ligand coordinating to one metal center while the third arm coordinates to a second metal center. Differences in the M-N(pyrrole) bond lengths across this series of complexes will be discussed with respect to the ability of the X group to act as a σ or π-donor to the metal.
