Increasing demand for development of new energy storage and resources has reignited research into CO and CO2 catalytic hydrogenation, with nickel being widely investigated. The current paper investigates the improvement of Ni-based catalysts by assessing the performance of a series of Ni-Mn/Al2O3 catalysts. Reactions were conducted over bi-metallic catalyst with differing Ni/Mn ratios. Results indicated that the temperature where conversion begins is dependent on the metal content. Similarly, the yield of desired light hydrocarbons was found to be dependent on nickel and manganese concentration. It was found that by adding a moderate loading of manganese to Ni/Al2O3, the activation barrier for both CO and CO2 hydrogenation decreased, while examining higher manganese loading (Ni:Mn 4:8) resulted in an increase in activation energy. The presence of bi-metallic oxide for catalysts with Ni/Mn ratio greater than one was found via XRD. Furthermore, NO-FTIR investigations indicated the changes in the number of sites responsible for linear or bent type adsorption, which can be interpreted as changes in the electronic structure. To examine this further, solid state surface electrostatic potentials were calculated based on KS-DFT. It was found that increasing manganese content decreased the ratio of C-/O-accepting sites, with resultant electronic structure changes increasing the energy barrier for C2H6 cracking and C–C bond rupture.
