Acetophenone was reduced using sodium borohydride to recieve the product, 1-phenylethanol. The reaction was performed using mechanochemistry without a solvent to improve green chemistry of the reaction. This is designed to reduce the amount of waste and improve energy efficiency. The reaction creates a new chiral center where the hydroxl group replaces the carbonyl group. In many applications, including the pharmaceutical community, there is a demand for control of chirality. Enantiomers can affect varying physiological pathways and lead to vastly different adverse effects on a cell which might not be competent to respond to the drug as intended. Biomolecules such as starch, glucose, and agar were investigated as chiral auxiliaries in the reduction under mechanochemical conditions.
