Minerals in the hydroxyapatite family, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, occur both geologically and biologically. In the human body, very fine apatite is interwoven with collagen and water to comprise bone. As apatite crystalizes the transition from amorphous calcium phosphate, or non-ordered apatite, to ordered apatite occurs. However, apatite has flexibility in its structure allowing minor changes in its composition and substitution of other bioavailable ions such as Mg2+, Na+, Cl-, F-, CO32-. These changes occur because bone is continually broken down and reformed. Changes in the apatite structure ultimately affect apatite’s properties, such as crystallinity and solubility. Apatite minerals were prepared in the presence of several bioavailable ions Mg2+, CO32-, C6H5O73-. Aliquots were removed at times intervals and the resulting solids were analyzed by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy and by ICP-MS. The results were used to determine the effect of the bioavailable ions on composition, structure, and kinetics of the transition from amorphous to a more ordered apatite.
