Natural product research is extensively studied due to the potential findings for a wide range of industrial potentials. Some of these industries include biofuels, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Catharanthus roseus is a plant species native to Madagascar but grown in the Hainan province of China. Four endophytic fungal strains from the diaporthe genus grown within this plant species were previously isolated in an attempt to identify useful organic compounds. These strains were grown in an augur solution. Due to the effectiveness and ease of transport for solid phase extraction, this technique was used to capture organic material from the fungi that was transferred to the augur in a liquid state. After extraction, gas chromatography mass spectroscopy was used to identify the compounds present. Carbon-18 bonded silica cartridges were used in the solid phase extraction technique as well as methanol to prepare the cartridges and extract the organic material. GCMS with a splitless injection was used in comparison to NIST library searches to identify compounds based on fragmentation patterns. After verification of the presence of organic material through high performance liquid chromatography, the results of GCMS showed growth conditions determine production outcomes for organic material and that volatile compounds produced vary from the nonvolatile compounds produced.
