Viologens are a useful class of molecules, used in batteries, solar cells, and electrochromic windows. However, there seems to be a dearth of easily accessible synthetic methods available for preparing viologens with N-substituted electron rich aromatic groups. Using diaryliodonium salts’ natural affinity to act as a leaving group while delivering nucleophiles to aryl rings, we demonstrate an effective method to prepare N-substituted heterocycles containing electron rich aromatics. We present the effects of solvent choice, base catalysis and alternate nitrogen heterocycles on these reactions.
