It has been well-recognized that the anisotropic packing/alignment of charge transport functionalities is crucial for high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices. Depending upon the inherent charge transport direction within a device, molecular-scale “edge-on” orientation of charge-transporting hosts is favorable for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), while the “face-on” orientational counterpart is preferential for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs).<br/>  Previously, we developed a novel solution-cast hole transport bottlebrush polymer (HTB) material that could achieve high degrees of “face-on” anisotropy upon vertically-aligning on substrates. Herein, the obtained anisotropic data were correlated with performance<br/>measurements of OLED full devices comprising HTBs and control HT polymers as hole transport layers (HTLs). The turn-on voltage and the external quantum efficiency of OLED device exhibited significant improvements with increased anisotropic alignment of HT moieties. From these results, we demonstrated that the anisotropic alignment of hole transport functionalities is beneficial for OLED device performance with thin HTL film.
