The measurement of radium in environmental samples is of particular interest due to its high radiotoxicity and solubility in water. Renewed interest and concern regarding the quantification of radium has arisen due to its relatively high concentrations in fracking flow back water. This has led to some concerns, especially since the separation of radium can be affected by the large amounts of barium potentially present in process waters. The aim of this study was to evaluate the uptake of radium on four different extraction chromatographic resins: Pb, Sr, TK100, and TK101. These four resins all utilize the same crown ether, di-t-butylcyclohexano 18-crown-6, as extractant. However, the diluents used in the preparations of the resins differ. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different diluents on the relative uptake of radium from various concentrations of nitric acid. Initially, the effect of acid concentration on the adsorption of radium on each resin was studied by measuring the initial and final activity concentration using the 186 keV gamma line of radium 226.
